Then & Now

The Australasian Hotel, built by George Lucas in the 1850’s where the Beachside Hotel currently stands, was popular with locals and visitors alike.

The top picture was taken in the 1920’s, the second in the 1940’s and the third in 2012.

The “Council Chambers” in 1912 was merely a room in the Police Station/Court House.

The councillors standing out front were all men.

In 1968, the temporary Council Chambers was built from concrete blocks.

The current building is on the same site.
